It's #WorldReflexologyWeek and I'm taking the opportunity to reflect on the evidence behind this complementary therapy.

In my blog, 'Are you a Reflexology Sceptic? I was!', I uncover research that supports the idea that it's not “just” a foot massage. With origins in Chinese and Egyptian medicine, it is based on the principle that reflex points on the feet correspond to different organs and systems in the body. Practitioners aim to stimulate these points to promote relaxation, circulation, and overall wellbeing.

While early systematic reviews highlighted a lack of robust evidence, more recent studies are building a stronger case. Research has linked reflexology to:

▶️Better sleep outcomes and reduced stress for menopausal women (Gökbulut et al.,2022)
▶️Pain reduction in cancer patients (Anderson & Downey, 2021)
▶️Relief from fatigue and musculoskeletal pain in healthcare professionals (Parlak et al., 2025)

Although further large-scale trials are needed, there is a growing body of evidence championed by the @aorreflexology suggesting reflexology supports wellbeing in meaningful ways. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) acknowledges that reflexologists can legitimately claim the therapy may improve mood, aid sleep, and promote wellbeing. At the very least, it provides an opportunity to relax, de-stress, and reconnect with yourself.
